Paid Rp 100.000 but the Meter Shows 66? Your PLN Meter Counts kWh

Your PLN meter shows a much smaller number than the rupiah you paid. That is not a short delivery: meters count kWh, not rupiah. Here is the arithmetic behind it.

The number on the meter is not rupiah

You buy a token for Rp 100.000, type it in, and the meter says something like 65.9. First reaction: where did the rest go?

Nowhere. The meter counts kilowatt-hours (kWh), the amount of electricity you can use, not the money you paid. Rp 100.000 buys roughly 63 to 69 kWh on the most common home tariff, so a number in the sixties on the display means the full token arrived.

It is the same as fuel: pay Rp 500.000 at the pump and the display shows the litres, not the money.

The arithmetic, in the open

Two things sit between your rupiah and your kWh:

  • Your tariff. PLN prices electricity per kWh by connection size. Most villas and houses are on the 1.300 to 2.200 VA class at about Rp 1.445 per kWh. Small subsidised 900 VA connections pay around Rp 1.352, and large 3.500 VA and up connections about Rp 1.700. The published tariffs are adjusted by the government from time to time.
  • Street lighting tax (PPJ). Each regency adds between roughly 3% and 10% to fund public lighting. In much of Bali it is at the higher end.

Worked example at 1.300 VA with a 5% PPJ: Rp 100.000 ÷ 1,05 ≈ Rp 95.200 of electricity, and Rp 95.200 ÷ Rp 1.445 ≈ 65,9 kWh. At a 10% PPJ the same token gives about 62,9 kWh. Same token, different regency, slightly different kWh.

How to check what was credited

When the meter accepts a token it briefly shows the kWh loaded by that token before returning to the running balance. Your delivery email from us also states the token amount in rupiah; the kWh on the meter and that rupiah amount will always look different, and now you know why.

To see the current balance later, most meters show it by default on the display. The balance falls as you use power, faster with air conditioning on, and the meter starts beeping when it gets low.

When something is actually wrong

A smaller-than-expected number in kWh is normal. These are not:

  • The balance did not increase at all after the meter showed BENAR or ACCEPT. Note the time and contact us with your order reference.
  • The token is rejected with SALAH or REJECT after careful retyping. The token may have been bought for a different meter number; check your order confirmation against the meter sticker.
  • The balance drains implausibly fast with nothing running. That is a wiring or appliance question for the property owner, not a token problem.

FAQ

I paid Rp 100.000 and got 66 on the meter. Was I short-changed?
No. The 66 is kWh, not thousands of rupiah. On the common 1.300 to 2.200 VA tariff with local street lighting tax, Rp 100.000 converts to roughly 63 to 69 kWh. The full value of the token arrived.
Why did my neighbour get more kWh for the same rupiah?
Different connection class or different regency. A subsidised 900 VA connection pays less per kWh, and the street lighting tax percentage varies by local government.
Do unused kWh expire?
No. The balance sits on the meter until used. Tokens themselves also have no meaningful expiry once issued for your meter; enter them and the credit stays.
How many kWh do I actually need?
A modest villa with one air conditioner typically uses a few hundred kWh per month; air conditioning dominates. If a Rp 100.000 token vanishes in days, the aircon hours are usually the explanation.
